PhD Position:Degradation and Mechanical Characterization of Polymers for Drug Delivery

This project is part of coordinated efforts at DTU and KU Pharma to develop new devices for oral drug delivery. The goal of this collaboration is the top-down microfabrication of micro-containers for unidirectional and controlled release of drugs. a PhD student at DTU Nanotech is evaluating various methods for the fabrication of micro-containers for oral drug delivery. In parallel, the collaborators at KU Pharma are developing test drugs and models for measurement of the actual drug release from these devices. The main goal of this project is development of innovative tools and methods for evaluating the degradation rate and mechanical properties of biodegradable polymers used in the realization of the micro-containers. Thin coatings of biodegradable polymers will be deposited using spray-coating techniques. The degradation and mechanical properties of such thin coatings is poorly understood and will be studied using micromechanical sensors such as cantilevers.

Eligibility:
-The applicant should have a degree in engineering, physics or chemistry preferably with experience in polymer microfabrication.
-A high grade average is decisive to be considered for the scholarship

DAAD PhD Scholarships in Conflict Studies and Management Programme (CSMP)

In line with the special focus of a public policy school, the research programme at the Brandt School looks at conflict management with a special interest in how policy-making and public policy as a research perspective (discipline) needs to be re-thought in the context of conflict resolution and post-conflict reconstruction efforts. Originally, the key concepts in the field of public policy were based on implicit assumptions about strong institutions and stable political conditions. However, nowadays it is becoming apparent that these approaches need to be revised to understand the special conditions and challenges in regions of conflict. In particular, the role of governments, international actors and NGOs as policy-makers in conflict areas, fragile states and war-torn countries are considered in the CSMP.

The PhD programme is a three-year-track combining independent research and course work on an advanced level. Candidates holding an appropriate Master’s degree with a strong research proposal preferably in the fields of post-conflict-management and reconstruction, peace building, institutional development and governance, regional security (esp. developing frameworks for regional security architectures), conflict resolution or terrorism are invited to apply. The strength of the research proposal is one of the major selection criteria.

In the first year of their doctoral studies students deepen their methodological and theoretical competence and work on their language skills. They are required to complete two courses per term, which are arranged with their academic advisors in advance. In addition, students will work on their research project in independent study units. In the second year, doctoral students focus on their own research project. Candidates may conduct field research and they may do research abroad either at one of our partner institutions or at an appropriate institution of their own choice or gain teaching/lecturing experience. In their third year, doctoral students will work towards completing their doctoral thesis. The degree is conferred after the public oral defence is completed and final revisions are submitted.

PhD Scholarships

The PhD Scholarships are awarded for the normal duration of the PhD course (3 years) with an additional German language course of generally 6 months before the beginning of studies. All scholarships will initially be awarded for a maximum of 12 months and can be extended upon application.

DAAD pays a monthly scholarship rate of currently 1000 â‚. The scholarship also includes contributions to health insurance in Germany. In addition, DAAD grants an appropriate travel allowance as well as a study and research subsidy and in applicable cases rent subsidies and / or family allowances. The scholarship holders will be exempted from tuition fees. They will be offered special tutoring at the Brandt School, and there is the possibility of further activities.

Application Requirements

Applications are open to candidates from countries in the Middle East, Central Asia, South Asia, South East Asia, Africa and Latin America (List of countries).

  • have an excellent knowledge of English; please provide evidence of this through the submission of appropriate language certificates (e.g. TOEFL: 550/213/80)7); a knowledge of German is advantageous, but not required.
  • in general have completed their Master`s degree in the last six years.
  • 2 years professional and / or research experience would be an asset.
  • Applicants cannot be considered if they have been in Germany for more than one year at the time of application.

International Max Planck Research School for Global Biogeochemical Cycles

International Max Planck Research School for Global Biogeochemical Cycles

Overview
The International Max Planck Research School for Global Biogeochemical Cycles (IMPRS-gBGC) in cooperation with the Friedrich Schiller University Jena offers a PhD program in global biogeochemistry and related Earth System sciences. The overall research and teaching focuses on:

* Improved understanding of biogeochemical processes with an emphasis on terrestrial ecosystems.
* Development of observational techniques to monitor and assess biogeochemical feedbacks in the Earth system.

Theory and model development for improving the representation of biogeochemical processes in comprehensive Earth system models

What are global biogeochemical cycles?
Biogeochemistry is the study of how the elements essential to life are distributed among the components of the Earth system - atmosphere, biosphere, lithosphere, land and oceans. The study of these global biogeochemical cycles takes on particular importance in the face of ongoing global environmental change and the recognition that they are linked to past and current climate change. Understanding and predicting the response of the Earth system requires a broad base of scientific knowledge and the skills to evaluate the importance of processes at a range of spatial and temporal scales.

Are there any fees?
Twice a year the International Max Planck Research School for Global Biogeochemical Cycles accepts applications for PhD stipends.
Costs for the IMPRS are completely covered by the German government except for a nominal enrollment fee at Friedrich Schiller University twice per year of around 180 Euro (which has benefits like free local public transport, discounts on food in university restaurants, etc.). Costs for consumables and equipment are covered by the host lab.

How does the funding for students look like?
Unless students obtain their own support, students with a Master`s or Diploma degree receive a scholarship which is free of tax and social insurance. The monthly allowance for the first year is 1,100 EUR and usually increase during the second and third year. The fellowships are offered for 1 year with a 2-year extension after positive evaluation by the students PhD Advisory Committee. The average time-frame for PhD studies in Germany is 3 years.

PhD Position, Department of Molecular Biotechnology, Ghent University, Belgium

Molecular epidemiology of Chlamydopila (Chlamydia) psittaci infections in humans and development of a recombinant C. psittaci vaccine for chickens

Period: for 2 years with a possibility to prolong till 4 years.
The research will be conducted in the Laboratory for Immunology and Animal Cell Biotechnology of Ghent University, Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Coupure links, 653, 9000 Ghent, Belgium

Supervision: Prof. Dr. Daisy Vanrompay

Research summary:
Human psittacosis (parrot fever) is a zoonotic infectious disease, which is caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydophila (Chlamydia) psittaci. Transmission of the disease from birds to humans usually originates from close contact with infected birds, most frequently in the context of the poultry industry. The infection is highly prevalent in turkeys and ducks. But, recently we demonstrated that C. psittaci is also widely spread in the chickens. The purpose of the research is to examine the transmission of C. psittaci from infected chickens to humans (co-operation with Ghent University hospital). In addition, we are going to develop a recombinant C. psittaci vaccine for chickens, as vaccination chickens would also reduce the risk of zoonotic C. psittaci transmission to humans.

Techniques: routine molecular cloning techniques, production of recombinant proteins, isolation of C. psittaci in different cell cultures, immunofluorescence staining, antibody ELISA’s, real-time PCR, micro arrays, gene sequencing, T cel proliferation assays, flow cytometry, production of polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies, 2D-gel electrophoresis, immunoblotting gaining experience in a biosafety level 3 laboratory (BSL3)

Start of the project: Possible from August 1st 2011

Profile
Degree: Master in Microbiology, Master in Animals Sciences, Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Master in Biosciences, Master in Biotechnology, Master in Molecular Biotechnology, Master in Immunology, Master in Agricultural Sciences
