Postdoc position in Carbon Nanotube based Composites

The work will focus on the development of nano-particle modified fibre reinforced polymer composites by modification of the system with nano-particles, specifically carbon nano-tubes (CNT). The purpose of the project led by the candidate is to improve resin dominated properties of fibre composite materials, like ILSS, toughness and impact resistance. The work will cover aspects such as functionalisation of the fillers, processing issues and characterisation from the nano- to the macroscopic scale.

The ideal candidate (m/f) is a communicative chemist, chemical engineer, material scientist or physicist with a PhD degree. The candidate should bring practical experience in the field ofnanocomposites, including the specific characterisation methods, preferably on CNT-epoxy systems. Furthermore, the candidate should already have lead a scientific project.

The Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona is a leading national institute carrying out research and education in the environmental sciences. ICTA promotes basic and applied multidisciplinary research into environmental processes and the relations between the changing environment and society. ICTA currently has 41 academic staff and over 80 early stage researchers (PhD students, post‐doctoral research associates).

ICTA invites applications for 1 fellowship in marine palaeoclimatology of 3 years for an early stage researcher (ESR) at the PhD student level The fellowship is sponsored by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Community as part of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network `GATEWAYS`.



The ESR will be embedded within ICTA`s marine science section that conducts research into marine palaeoclimatology and palaeoenvironments. The ESR fellowship is directed towards establishing ocean deep water distributions in the past and their relation to variable heat and salt transports to and across the Atlantic. Analytical methodologies specifically focus on radiogenic isotopes. The ESR fellow is expected to achieve a PhD degree during the fellowship.

Eligibility.
EC Marie Curie ITN recruitment and mobility regulations apply. Eligible for the ESR fellowship at the ICTA/UAB are:

1. Spanish nationals who have legally resided and had their main activity outside Spain and the EU (i.e., in a non associated third country) for at least three of the last four years immediately prior to the ESR appointment;
2. Non Spanish nationals who have not resided or carried out their main activity in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the ESR appointment (short stays such as holidays are not taken into account);
3. Fellows holding a Master degree in a relevant field and are in the first 4 years (full time equivalent) of their research career, including the period of research training, starting at the date of obtaining the degree which formally entitles them to enter a doctorate;

This project about The Influence of Family and School on Future Life Plans of Adolescents is funded by a grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).

Research project:
The influence of family and school on future life plans of adolescents This research project aims to study the future life plans of adolescents. Attention will be paid to their ambitions for their educational and occupational careers, and to their intentions with regard to family formation. An important question is to what extent – in this era of individualization – the future plans of adolescents are still influenced by their social environment: the parents, the school, and the peer group, and whether this influence depends on the field of planning. The project will use data collected in 2005 among 1500 students of grades three, four and five in secondary education. In the questionnaire, the 14 to 17 year olds reported extensively on their plans and expectations with regard to their future life course ineducation, occupation and family formation. Data from parents were collected as well. They received a mail survey in which they were asked to describe their expectations and ambitions for their children. As students were interviewed in school classes, the project also allows to study the influence of school and peers within the school class.



Tasks
The PhD student is expected to:
-analyze survey data with sophisticated multi-level modelling techniques;
-conduct a small data collection among the schools that participate in the study;
-write articles for international peer reviewed scientific journals;
-write a PhD thesis;
-participate in the activities of the research programme Social Inequalities and the Life Course (SILC) of the Department;
-contribute to the teaching tasks of the Department.

Requirements
We are looking for a candidate (f/m) with a relevant university Masters degree in Sociology, Demography or another Social Science. Excellent knowledge of quantitative methods of analysis is required. The PhD research candidate needs to be proficient in spoken and written English.

The PhD position will be available at the VU University Amsterdam in the Department of Social Research Methodology. The appointment will be available initially for 12 months. After a successful evaluation the contract will be prolonged with 36 months. The candidate will participate in the PhD programme of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Thesis:
Studying lipid metabolism of Plasmodium is of great interest as its normal functioning is essential for the survival of the parasite. Targeting this metabolism with drugs represents a new pharmaceutical approach against malaria. Plasmodium is well suited for systems biology studies because during its life cycle this parasite activates a rare diversity of metabolic pathways. Reconstructing synthesis pathways of lipid metabolism in Plasmodium is crucial for understanding the biology of this agent of disease. The objective of this thesis is to develop a methodology for constructing dynamic mixed metabolic and genetic networks by using heterogeneous data. This methodology will be applied to transcriptomic and metabolomic data in order to build a model for lipid metabolism in Plasmodium. This model will be used for /in silico/ studies of the life cycle and of the defences against perturbations of the parasite.



Team:
The phD Student will join the new team `Biological Physics and Systems Biology` in the lab DIMNP (UMR 5235) in Montpellier. Our team develops physical, mathematical and computer science approaches for the understanding of the functioning of biological systems. At the centre of our approaches is the multi-scale modelling of the biological processes by using statistical physics, dynamical systems and stochastic processes techniques.

SEARCA Scholarships 2011-2012 for Master and PhD in Agriculture

The Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) invites applications for its graduate scholarship (MS and PhD) in agriculture and related fields (including biological sciences, social sciences, economics and statistics, forestry and fisheries, environmental sciences, agro-industrial technology and engineering, biochemistry, and development management) for School Year 2011-2012. The scholarship is open to nationals of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam who are regular employees of academic or research institutions or government agencies and not older than 35 years old.

Applicants may submit their applications to their countries’ respective Ministries of Education, Higher Education, Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, Environment and Natural Resources, or Rural Development. PhD student position (TVöD 13/2) : Aerodynamics and Flow Technology

The Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Braunschweig, Germany, offers a PhD student position (TVöD 13/2) for research activities in the field of flow solver developments.

Description of activities:
An internationally recognized junior-scientists group in the C²A²S²E² department of the Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology works on the development of the flow solver PADGE for compressible flows based on discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods. Currently, the focus is on efficient solver algorithms for discretisations of higher order, on error estimation with respect to aerodynamic force coefficients and on various refinement strategies. Turbulent flows are based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the Wilcox-k model.



The PhD candidate will work on the further development of turbulent flow simulations in the PADGE code. The tasks of the PhD candidate include:
- the development of new discretizations of turbulent boundary conditions for the RANS-kω equations.
- the analysis of the solution behaviour close to turbulent boundary layers,
- the development of a DG discretization of the RANS-k-SST equations as well as
- the development of a DG discretization of a Reynolds stress model (RSM).

This includes the consideration of special aspects related to discretizations of higher order and local mesh refinement. The new methods shall be applied to realistic aerodynamic test cases.

Parts of these developments could also be worked on in the framework of a diploma or master thesis and could then be continued as PhD thesis.

The programme is designed to academically qualify future leaders in politics, law, economics and administration according to the principles of Good Governance and to prepare them in a praxis-oriented course for their professional life. The programme offers very good graduates with a first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) the chance to obtain a Master`s degree in disciplines that are of special relevance for the social, political and economic development of their home country. With the knowledge and experience acquired in Germany the scholarship holders should later contribute to the establishment of democratically devised economic and social systems aimed at overcoming social tensions. In addition, the training at German institutions of higher education should especially qualify the scholarship holders as partners in political and economic cooperation with Germany. With this programme, DAAD intends to contribute to the support of Good Governance and civil society structures in selected partner countries and regions.



Who can apply?
Very well qualified Indonesian graduates with a first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) who want to actively contribute to the social, political and economic development of their home countries as future leaders. The scholarships are offered both for young graduates without professional experience and for mid-career professionals.

What is fundable?
Scholarships for (generally) two-year Master courses at a German institution of higher education. The successful candidates will study on selected Master courses with one of the following focuses:
1. Development and Governance
2. Public Policy
3. Management in non-profit Organizations
4. Democratic Governance and Society
5. Public Economics, Law, and Politics

The courses have an international orientation and are taught in German or English or bilingual. The scholarship holders will study in groups and be offered special tutoring at their host institutions. Furthermore, there is the possibility of networking-events for participants in different courses and their attendance at tailor-made summer-schools.

All scholarship holders will be placed in German courses for normally 6 months before taking up their Master studies. This also applies to scholarship holders in Master courses taught in English. DAAD pays a monthly scholarship rate of currently 750 € including the health insurance in Germany. In addition, DAAD grants an appropriate travel allowance as well as a study and research subsidy and in applicable cases rent subsidies and / or family allowances.

[Germany] PhD Student Fellowship in Natural Sciences at Friedrich Schiller University

The Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC) is funded by the German Excellence Initiative. It conceptionally combines different research areas (microbial communities, interactions with plant, animal and human hosts and environmental interactions) to a comprehensive picture of microbial communication (www.jsmc.uni-jena.de). JSMC is an ambitious Graduate School comprising over 180 PhD students who are educated in a structured, interdisciplinary training program based on top-level fundamental research. Five faculties of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, six non-university research institutions as well as thirteen partner companies are participating in this cutting edge research and training program that includes an innovative PhD program, career development and intensive sociocultural care. Soil-plant-microorganisms interactions have profound impacts on rhizosphere processes such as microbial activities, water distribution, and nutrient and water uptake by plant roots. Common models of water and nutrient uptake by roots are based on brute-force averaging approaches, assuming that the rhizosphere has the same properties as the bulk soil. The project will provide a holistic approach to describe interactions between rhizosphere transport properties and plant and microbial communities at the pore scale.

Project Description:
The National Center for Computational Sciences (www.nccs.gov) is looking for a post Doctoral Researcher to conduct research and development in `Data Management for Petascale Scientific Applications`. The successful candidate will work in a team with researchers of the End-to-End Task Group of NCCS, researchers from the Scientific Data Management Center (http://sdm.lbl.gov/sdmcenter), as well as applications scientists on large-scale data-intensive and computationally intensive scientific workflows, and the associated management issues.



Qualifications:
Position requires a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field. Applicants should have completed their PhD in Computer Science or a related field, or should be very near completion (the position is open until filled), and have experiences or background in one or more of the following:

1. parallel and distributed computing
2. data /computational Grid systems and middleware
3. solid programming experience (e.g. C, Java, Perl, Python)
4. concepts of workflow languages and systems
5. databases

The applicant should have an interest to interact with scientists from application domains to understand the technology they use, and to apply and adapt CS techniques to these domains. The successful candidate will join End-to-End Task Group at NCCS. Scientific workflows need to be created for various simulation codes to monitor them, to perform analysis and visualization on their output, to archive data and to couple such codes into an integrated framework. PhD Studentship in Robotics at University of Ulster, UK

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship on the study and development of a robot operating in a smart home. This project is part of a wider programme to develop intelligent environment technologies. An intelligent environment is fitted with sensors to monitor and infer activity within the home. A mobile robot can help by monitoring from different viewpoints and at close range. The robot can be directed to the location of the activity to collect further evidence of activity detected by the network of fixed sensors. Similarly, the robot can investigate suspected sensor failure to provide autonomicity and act as a temporary sensor to re-establish a full operating intelligent environment. The introduction of the robot will permit activities to be disambiguated and help enhance activity analysis.

Candidates should hold, or expect to hold by 15 August 2010, a first or upper second class honours degree in Computer Science or engineering. Successful candidates will enrol as of September 2010, on a full-time programme of research studies leading to the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

The studentship will comprise fees and an annual stipend of £13,590. It will be awarded for a period of up to three years subject to satisfactory progress and is tenable in the Faculty of Computing and Engineering at the Jordanstown Campus.

As one of the forerunners in imaging research our group has a broad spectrum of interest. This position will be related to our expertise in Neurodegeneration and regeneration which includes research into:

This position will be in close collaboration with the Electron Microscopy for Materials Science lab (EMAT). Here the following equipment will be available:
1 scanning electron microscope
1 dual beam FIB
6 transmission electron microscopes (TEM)

The most advanced TEM, will be of crucial importance for this project and is unique in Europe. The microscope is a double lens corrected instrument working at voltages between 50 and 300 kV and achieving a resolution of 50 pm. It also has a monochromator to lower the energy resolution to about 150 meV.

Job description
Combining small animal MRI using contrast agents and/or nanoparticles for stem cell research and nerve fiber tracing with advanced EM tools to simultaneously image cellular ultrastructure and localization of nanoparticles. The aim of this project is to get a better comprehension of the cell-nanoparticle interactions.

[Czech Republic] PhD Position in Cell Biology, Genetics and Biochemistry at Charles University

PhD Position in Cell Biology, Genetics and Biochemistry at Charles University; Prague

PhD position to work on the Exo70 family of cell morphogenesis regulators in Physcomitrella patens within the EU-ITN project PLANTORIGINS at the Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic).

We have a position open for a PhD student in our lab to study the functions of thirteen Exo 70 paralogues (putative subunits of the exocyst vesicle tethering complex) in Physcomitrella patens polar cell growth and morphogenesis. We use a large variety of tools from the disciplines of cell biology, genetics and biochemistry, as well as the gene targeting capabilities of moss, to study the mechanisms of Exo70 and exocyst functions in a moss type of early land plants.

[Germany] 2 PhD Student Positions in Osteoimmunology at Technische Universität Dresden

The Institute of Physiological Chemistry, Medical Faculty Carl Gustav Carus, TU Dresden offers within the DFG Schwerpunktprogramm `Osteoimmunology - IMMUNOBONE – A Program to unravel the Mutual Interactions between the Immune System and Bone` (SPP 1468)

2 PhD student positions, available immediately (50% TV-L, E13).

The aim of both PhD projects is to investigate the complex interactions between bone and the immune system focusing on the role of SWAP-70 in the regulatory interplay of cells of the immune system and osteoclasts.



Applicants should hold a degree in biology, biochemistry or an equivalent degree in other life sciences. We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a strong interest in Immunology/Hematology/Bone Biology, who should have good English communication skills. Previous experience in cellular immunology and/or flow cytometry is a plus but not necessity.

Both positions offer an excellent opportunity to obtain expertise in a wide spectrum of cell biology techniques, animal models for human diseases, biochemistry, while working in a stimulating, international environment.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Mesoscale Modeling of Nuclear Fuel at Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NYU-Poly; Brooklyn, NY

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position in the Computational Mechanics Laboratory at NYU-Poly. The selected postdoctoral fellow will participate in a vibrant interdisciplinary research group and will be involved in a research effort which aims at modeling the behavior of nuclear fuel under extreme conditions. Computational mechanics and theory will be the principal tool of investigation.



Requirements:
1. PhD. in mechanical engineering, materials science, computational materials science or a related field.
2. Experience in at least two of the following areas: finite element modeling, Monte Carlo, phase field or molecular mechanics modeling.
3. Experience in scientific computing (Fortran, C, or C++ programming, parallel computing, and Unix/Linux computing environments).
4. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
5. Demonstrated ability to work independently in a multidisciplinary research environment.

Note:
The initial appointment will be for one year, with a possibility of renewal contingent upon the availability of continuing funding and satisfactory performance.
